Nelsonite Becomes Virginia’s State Rock

Ever wonder what Virginia’s state rock was?

Governor McAuliffe signed a bill on Friday the 1st naming Nelsonite as the state rock of Virginia. This will become official on July 1st of 2016. Virginia was one of only a few states that did not have a state rock.

Nelsonite, named after Nelson County near Charlottesville, is one of the only rocks named after a county. This rock was mined primarily in Nelson County in the early 1900’s and was a major boom to the surrounding economy. Nelsonite can be used to make steel, paint pigments and dye, fertilizer, and even artificial teeth!

While this stone is no longer mined in Nelson County, the name of the stone is still used across the world.

Silestone Launches New Collection

Silestone’s most natural appearance
Nebula Code is a new technological discovery by Cosentino that features unique patterns, harmonies and unparalleled movements in a quartz surface to create uniquely original slabs. Each vein is different. Each slab is different.

The Nebula Code series represents the beauty of irregularity, the randomness of nature applied to a product manufactured with the guarantee of Silestone in terms of hardness, resistance to impact, and scratching, bacteriostatic protection and extremely low absorption.

Uniform sophistication
Light browns verging on beiges are showcased in Silestone’s perfect example of discreet simplicity. Daria is the essence of subtle harmony for surfaces that can be adapted to an extensive palette of environments.

Bright and familiar
Helix balances its dominant off-white colour with the natural suggestion of the vein. The careful construction of these patterns is offset with multiple shades of grey, giving it a classic, pure appearance.

Brightness with a hint of colour
The colour Pulsar by Cosentino adorns the white of pure quartz with veins that combine conventional and delicate greys with a hint of colour ranging from beige to mustard hues. A classic option with a hint of sun.

Environmental Reflection
The high chromatic adaptability of Istmo, its soft brown veins and its reflection of nature make it an indisputable choice for beautiful environments.

Elegant style
Dreis is the result of Silestone’s quest to seek out the serene warmth of browns. With predominant dark shades as a foundation, the original and natural veins provide the clarity needed to provide a stylish and unique contrast.

Strategic Granite Reserve!

So I could not resist posting this story.  Yes, it is not our ‘kind’ of granite.  Yes it is not this country.  But I LOVE that somewhere in the world there is a government minister tasked with managing the ‘Strategic Granite Reserve’!  Here is the text with a link at the bottom.  Enjoy!

SINGAPORE: The government will release the national granite stockpile from Wednesday to main contractors who have on-going projects that require granite for concreting works.

This comes after a temporary disruption in the supply of granite from Indonesia. The Building and Construction Authority said in a statement on Tuesday that it has briefed various industry groups about the situation.

The release of the national stockpile will tide the industry over as supply from other regional sources is ramped up. The BCA also urged the industry to continue to diligently look for alternative sources and diversify.

Quarry Flooding

Heavy rains have recently flooded many areas of northern Brazil.  In this picture, you can see the Bianco Romano quarry which now expects to see material shortages and delays of up to two months before returning to normal production.  Stay tuned for local impacts here in the US.

Great Full Height Backsplash

Sometimes the most memorable thing about a project can be the smallest of details.  This photo shows a stunning kitchen with a perfectly matched walnut wood island from Grothouse Lumber, but the thing that stands out is the craftsmanship in the full height backsplash.  Look closely and you will see the way they made shadow boxing out of stone and built depth and detail into an area that is normally very two dimensional.  Great design and perfect execution make a stunning combination.

Blending Materials (Quartz and Glass)

Modern kitchen designers increasingly focus on blending materials within a space to create balance.  This photo is a great example of materials that work well together in style, form and function.  The white countertop is White Platinum quartz and it is installed flush adjacent to a clear glass eating area top.  In our experience, the man made materials blend well together like quartz and glass, and the natural materials work together as well with wood or marble islands mixed in with granite countertops around the exterior or a butcher block.  The most challenging combination is to use a man made material and a natural material in the same space.  It is certainly possible and the final look can be stunning, but it requires more diligence in sampling and conceptualization.  The possibilities are endless!

Island In Silestone Carbono

Here is a great shot of a playful island in Carbono by Silestone.  The vertical pieces were mitered and mechanically fastened to a hidden support structure to give the impression of a floating eating area.  The design opens up a third space within the kitchen between the islands that would not exist with a more normal design.

ECO Recycled Countertops

Granite Source recently completed another branch location for one of the country’s largest banks and it made us realize how surfaces have changed in the last ten years.  These are complicated pieces with laminated edges up to 8″ thick and precise waterjet cutouts for deposit slips and pen inserts, and they are being done with recycled materials on a consistent basis!  This is a huge step forward for our industry and I think a glimpse into the future.  You can learn more about ECO by Cosentino here. http://www.ecobycosentino.com/usa/

Glass – The Next Big Trend?

Got Glass?   An Exciting New Material for Today’s Inspired Homeowner
By Jennifer Croy Bostic, Design Coordinator
Are you looking for something beautiful, perhaps unique or even a bit trendy for your new home or renovation?  Are you considering an update to your kitchen, bathroom or other area? If so, then look no further, actually right through my suggestion, glass– yes, glass for your next project.  A sturdy but pliable material that lets you personalize your home in ways you may have never imagined.  When dreaming of your new kitchen countertops and backsplashes, don’t forget to consider this exciting new design option.

Glass combines beauty with function because of its maintenance free and durable surface that pops in a broad range of textures, colors, and custom features.  Clear, textured, or frosted are just a few choices to incorporate, even your favorite photographs can be showcased.   One can be adventurous, bold even– begin to think outside of the design box with an architectural piece!  Shower doors, room dividers, wall art, doors, water features and more, glass brings about unlimited potential and exciting new ideas.

On HGTV’s website,  Farima Alavi  writes that ”aside from its sleek, clean appearance, glass countertops have many benefits. Glass can be cut into any shape and texture and can be stained in any color. Even though it’s a pricier option, it’s becoming increasingly more popular because of its modern look. It’s easy to keep clean and its non-porous surface makes it stain-resistant and one of the most hygienic countertop materials available…”
